Zsh shell for IPFire

Hi all,
meanwhile i really  zsh in IPFire and i just wanted to ask the community what are you thinking about zsh instead of bash ?

Best,

Erik

I’m passionless using bash or zsh. Could you tell us something about the differences?

Good Morning @ummeegge .

Would this be to open a command interface from the GUI?.

That would be great, but the access should be protected by the ROOT password, to avoid touching the elephants.

Regards.

Hi all,

you can find in here → Zsh vs Bash | Top 36 Differences You Should Know a short listing about both shells in comparison. Or may a fast Youtube video for some improvements ideas → https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9g-VfKnkoU and of course Oh-my-zsh on Github → GitHub - ohmyzsh/ohmyzsh: 🙃 A delightful community-driven (with 2,200+ contributors) framework for managing your zsh configuration. Includes 300+ optional plugins (rails, git, macOS, hub, docker, homebrew, node, php, python, etc), 140+ themes to spice up your morning, and an auto-update tool so that makes it easy to keep up with the latest updates from the community. .

Good morning Roberto. No this is simply another shell with currently no relation to the GUI.

Best,

Erik

So it seems ZSH would give me a built-in solution for https://community.ipfire.org/t/powerline-shell-beautifyer/647/3

If you checkout the themes

you surely will find something equal.

Best,

Erik

Hey boys,

are we talking about adding zsh as a package or replace the default shell to zsh?

I do not see any advantage of zsh really. How “nice” it looks is absolutely not relevant for me. Functionality seems to be pretty much equal for me, too.

zsh is becoming more popular indeed. It has become the default shell on Mac OS X now, and some other big distributions use it as default. However, I would still expect to get a bash everywhere I go. And I think being mainstream on things like this is not a bad idea at all.

Hi Michael,
even i use it the whole time, i thought of it as a potential addon :slightly_smiling_face:

Best,

Erik

I also saw it as the default instead of the bash. And not as a pakfire addon.

@ms I also think ipfire should be kept small and simple. But a little bit comfort will be nicer too. I prefer nano instead of vi

Nano is available as a package.

And I do prefer comfort too, that’s why I use vi
