I’ve been using Mullvard DNS for a while, but I keep getting a “Reverse lookup failed” message for rDNS. Otherwise, everything’s been smooth sailing.
Has anyone else noticed this and found a solution? The settings are as shown in the screenshot.
I’m also a Mullvad user but normally do not have any of their public DNS Resolvers in my IPF DNS list.
Curiosity got the better of me so I added dns.mullvad.net IPv4 address 194.242.2.2 to my IPF config and interestingly I got the same failed message as you did.
I suspect the reason for this error is reverse DNS lookups typically require specific configurations and support from the DNS server which I suspect Mullvad’s public DNS resolver http://dns.mullvad.net does not have.
I generally only use DNS resolvers listed here: www.ipfire.org - List of Public DNS Servers.
Cheers,
Hi,
I have not tested but do you see the note on the Mullvad Homepage
These IPs can only be used with DNS resolvers that support DoH or DoT, not with DNS over UDP/53 or TCP/53.
You need to contact the Mullvad people and ask them to configure their DNS server so that it carries out rDNS.
double post sorry
Take a closer look, Mullvad is part on this list, i count twice
As you can see in my screenshot, I am using the TLS Option, which means I am using port 832 853 for the DNS queries, which is supposed to represent the so-called “DoT” way of a DNS server configuration
Really? They will never read my email
I sent an email a couple of years ago to UncensoredDNS because they had a failing rDNS.
It got fixed.
Three weeks ago a forum user sent an email to DNS4EU because they had a faIling rDNS.
It got fixed.
If you don’t ask it will probably not get fixed.
and if they ignore you then ask yourself if that is the DNS server you want to be using.
ups, sorry, you are absolutely right, but at least it looked almost the same
I send this email in a very nice form, if they read it, they will laugh and fix it ;D
