VDSL & igmpproxy

I think I see an issue with fresh install. Many modern VDSL networks require VLAN ID for PPPoE connection. IPFire supports that but package igmpproxy has to be installed with packfire. It is not part of default installation and that means you cannot fix it after fresh install because VDSL requires VLAN ID to connect to the internet and IPFire doesn’t support that after fresh install, so packfire cannot download igmpproxy from the internet…

UPDATE
IPFire supports VLAN ID without package igmpproxy. In Dialup configuration VDSL connection has to be selected and after that a field “INET_VLAN” is added to the Dialup form. igmpproxy is needed for TV over IP (another VLAN ID).

I have not tested it but I will do it in the future, my friend has this kind of VDSL connectivity that requires VLAN ID. My ISP offered me in the past faster version of VDSL but because it required VLAN ID I postponed the upgrade until I will find how to configure it in my router (IPFire or any other router) but I have not found it so I still use slower VDSL with older modem that hides VLAN ID. There is a documented configuration for Mikrotik routers, how to configure PPPoE with VLAN ID. And I found that there are just two kinds of home internet routers:

  1. Routes those can be used because they support PPPoE with VLAN ID
  2. Older routers with PPPoE but without support for VLAN ID, those cannot be used

That is not correct. After setting up your VDSL page on the dial up section

https://www.ipfire.org/docs/configuration/system/dial

then go to the Zone Configuration page

https://www.ipfire.org/docs/configuration/network/zoneconf

and set up your red interface with the required vlan id and then reboot.

I have done this with my Glass Fibre ethernet connection where the ISP requires a vlan id to be set on the red interface for the internet connection to be working.
