Restore backup not working "Request Entity Too Large"

I had a hardware issue with a failing SSD which is now sorted and now have a fresh install of Core 195 ready to go but I am unable to restore my backup!

When creating the backup I selected the option to include log files and it is a little over 1.2GB in size. This seems to be an issue with IPFire’s web GUI as I get the bellow error.

Request Entity Too Large
The requested resource does not allow request data with POST requests, or the amount of data provided in the request exceeds the capacity limit.

So I tried copying the file over via ssh to /var/ipfire/backups and the file appeared in the GUI but there is no option (as far as i can tell) to restore any of the backup’s with out first downloading them and then uploading.

So any suggestions as to where to look to either increase the upload size or perhaps another way to restore please.

Would this not be a slight bug if IPFire allows the creation of a backup that’s too large to be restored?

Also, unless I’ve missed it somewhere. The ability to restore from a backup all ready present on the system via the GUI would be grate. Unless of course it’s by design for reasons my little brain can’t comprehend.

Thanks in advance for any advise

I also do all my backups with log files but the largest I ever had was 650MB, which was when I still logged all the DROP INPUT messages. After turning off that logging, as seeing all the rubbish on the internet that was dropped from accessing my system was not of much benefit to me, I am running at around 250MB.

I don’t think any of us has had such large log files.

That you can’t do but you can restore from a file name using the console or ssh command line as per this wiki documentation.

https://www.ipfire.org/docs/configuration/system/backup/backupconsole

Hope this helps.

This is all very easily fixable:

git.ipfire.org Git - ipfire-2.x.git/commitdiff

There is indeed a 1 GiB limit for file uploads. I suppose backups have never been this large before. I think a 2 GiB limit should be plenty.

Thanks for the report.

A first workaround for @kingsize is

  1. change /etc/httpd/conf/vhosts.d/ipfire-interface-ssl.conf (lines 19ff)
    # Allow uploads of up to 2 GiB (for backup restores)
    LimitRequestBody 2147483648
  2. restart webserver
    /etc/init.d/apache reload

Thanks all

I tried Berhard’s work around but could not find where to put the line ( I know enough to be dangerous :cowboy_hat_face:) even though it’s right there in his fix.

So I instead read the manual from the link provided by Adolf and managed to restore that way.

Thanks again all

You must do it from the CLI, using an editor like nano.
