Hello,
I’ve setup many QoS classes in my ipFire router, but there is still a lot of traffic going into the default class. How to know what is falling in that class?
Hello Dominic,
It seems you’ve encountered a common scenario in your IPFire setup where a substantial amount of traffic is being directed to the default QoS class. Here are some tips which will help you manage this:
- Inspect your QoS configurations: Make sure that your rules cover all types of expected traffic.
- Utilise QoS graphs for insights: Although IPFire doesn’t log traffic types per class, it does provide a QoS graph within the QoS section. Analyse these graphs to observe the traffic patterns and identify peak times or high-usage classes.
- Tailor your QoS classes: Based on the graphical data, consider creating additional rules or tweaking existing ones to ensure traffic is appropriately classified, thus reducing the load on the default class.
- Continuous Monitoring: After adjustments, keep an eye on the QoS graphs to ensure that traffic distribution is in line with your expectations.
The default class essentially functions as a fallback for traffic that doesn’t match any other specified rules. By refining the classification rules and regularly reviewing the graphical data provided by IPFire, you can enhance network performance and prioritise critical traffic.
For more insights into setting up and managing QoS, refer to the Quality of Service section of the IPFire wiki.
Kind Regards,
A G
Without knowing what fells into the default class, I’m unable to create proper QoS rules. How to see what fall (ports especially) into that class?
QoS try to mark all connections for defined classes and all trafic that has no connectionmark after all rule lines are passed is going to the default class.
