OpenVPN Connections on Mainpage missing

Dear IPFire developers,
since upgrading to IPFire 2.29 (x86_64) - Core Update 189, the status of the OpenVPN Net-to-Net connections is missing about 1 day after system startup. On the OpenVPN tab, the connections are shown as disconnected. The traffic through the tunnels runs smoothly. After the update, all information was displayed as expected/usual.
I restarted the IPFire system and the expected information is displayed as usual.
This is not particularly critical, but it did cause me some confusion.
Best regards Heinz
btw: You guys are great, thanks for your constant efforts!

Hello, it’s me again.

In order to keep track of the net-to-net connections, the groundhog continues to greet me daily: Restart! Then the “gui” will be meaningful again.
I haven’t received any feedback on my post yet, nor any messages from other users. So I assume that this behavior is only present on my systems.
Or do I have to post such an “error” elsewhere?
Perhaps someone can give me some brief assistance.
Best regards Heinz

Hi @hja7860.

Don’t feel discriminated against because no one answers you. It happens to me many times and it’s probably only me and if they don’t answer me, it’s because they don’t want to add comments without value.

I advise you to put more information about the problem, for example:

  • Screenshots of the error.
  • The IPFire Logs that you can see in the WUI in LOGs → System Logs.
  • Copy or try to determin the error in /var/logs/. To do this, access the terminal via ssh or with Winscp (that’s how I do it).
  • It’s also important to put information about your installation System → System information in the WUI.
  • A small network diagram to explain a little about your installation or the complexity of it. I recommend the free tool draw.io.

If you put this, surely someone who knows more than me will be able to help you.

Greetings and encouragement.

Hallo @hja7860

Welcome to the IPFire community.

It is autumn vacation period so more people are probably away.
I have been away myself for the last two weeks so have not been able to do any testing to see if I can reproduce what you are seeing, as a first step.

I hope, later this week to be able to do that testing and then come back to you.

Of course anyone else is also welcome to do the testing to see if the issue can be reproduced.

@roberto input on info to provide is also a good suggestion to follow. It will also help to judge how to test and what is being looked for.

Hi @hja7860

I realised that you are talking about the N2N connection and that it is showing as disconnected even though you have traffic going through the tunnel.

On my vm test systems I have a N2N connection and it has never shown any problem with the status display, however usually I have not run it for more than 8 or 10 hours.

I normally only run it longer when doing a Testing evaluation and I don’t remember seeing any issue with the status display in the past or when testing CU189.

However, I will set my system up to run with the N2N connection with the CU189 release and leave it running for a couple of days to see what result I get.

I have had my Core Update 189 vm setups running, with a Net2Net OpenVPN connection, for 48 hours now and the connection status has stayed showing a Green Connected both on the OpenVPN and the Main WUI pages the whole time.

So I cannot reproduce the effect that you are seeing of the connection status saying Disconnected on a daily basis, even though the tunnel is working.

As the connection is still working for you but it is the WUI page that shows a difference, it might be worth looking at the

/var/log/httpd/error_log

file to see if it is showing any errors related to either the ovpnmain.cgi or index.cgi page names.

Hello Robert,

sorry for the late response, I was temporarily ill.
Thanks for your tips, I’ll keep them in mind in future.

Hello Adolf,

First of all, thank you for the feedback and your commitment.
I will remove the now installed but annoying daily “autostart” from the affected machines and follow your “instructions”.
As soon as I have the relevant data available, I will get back to you, also with screenshots, lists and the like, as recommended by Robert (see above).
Until then, all the best
