Due to backwards compatibility reasons, you can’t assign more than one VLAN to a zone
I am working toward replacing a network gateway/firewall device in a small business setting and one of the things it currently does is allow multiple VLANs to be defined on an interface. This is something I have to be able to do for this network.
If the documentation above is up-to-date and accurate that means that even if I had 100 interfaces I’d be limited to three VLANs on this device. Is this correct?
Four technically but three functional VLANs as my red interface is generally not going to be used in that fashion.
What is the time table for updating this? I’ve read in other threads that ver 3 is likely going to address the issue? I like this project and want to keep using this but this thing is a deal breaker for some implementations.
Yes, IPFire-3.x will provide that capability but as we have often mentioned in the past some good level of donations would be required to enable the developers to spend enough time on it.
Over the last year or so the donation level has gone down to a level where it only just about covers the infrastructure costs for IPFire.
So the focus over the last year has been on IPFire-2.x and the last commits applied to IPFire-3.x were in April 2025.
Basically IPFire-3.x will be worked on when updates or new additions for IPFire-2.x or bugs in IPFire-2.x are at such a level that the developers have free time that they can focus on IPFire-3.x
This is all very logical and I don’t mean to come into the forum to make it sound as if I don’t appreciate this project. I really find it to be a very good project overall. I use IPFire in my home and wanted to extend its use to some of my clients. This would have been a scenario where I would have wanted to fit donations to the project into the invoice in some way.
This is something I can’t do since I can’t use it for their scenario. On the part of the project it is a bit of chicken and egg problem in this instance.
Roughly speaking if you were to divide what is needed amongst the estimated user base, how much would each user need to donate to meet the financial needs?
