A standard config, recommended especially for beginners ( and others 
), is
internet <---> { router/modem } <---> { red0 | IPFire | green0 } <---> LAN
I prefer to use a modem at the connection to the internet. Routers often use their own NAT firewall, which causes double NAT making possibly some trouble.
IPFire can support a second LAN, blue0, which is supposed for wireless devices. Putting them into a separate network is intended by the fact, that wireless connections cannot be controlled as wired ones and thus are less trusted.
