Help with Samba and shared network folder

Hi new user of IPFIRE. Installed system and has been running brilliantly for the last six months.
A client has requested the possibility of setting up a simple shared drive on the IPFIRE server.
I’ve installed samba and am having difficulty with configuring the samba config file.
After installing SAMBA I’m assuming that there would be more sub-menus in the GUI to set-up users and shared directories etc… All I have in the GUI is a SAMBA link below the IPFIRe menu which is not a active link to other menus.
I have added users via the samba configuration manual procedure but don’t have the GUI menu as prompted in the user manual.
Is there something I’m missing?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @iosp

Welcome to the IPFire community.

Several years back the samba addon was simplified greatly and that simplification changed the menu look.

Unfortunately no samba user has updated the wiki so far.

It is on my list of things to do if no one else does it.

On the main menu page there will be a section labelled Shares. If you have not created any then the section will be empty. The following screenshot is from a vm development system I have that already has a share defined.

Press the button labelled Add share and the following section will be on the main menu page.

All the values shown are the default ones. You can then edit the ones you want to. Most can be left as they are, except for the path which has to be defined.

Here I have changed the share name and added the path of the share on IPFire.

Once you have made the changes you want to then just press the Save button and you will see the Shares section with the newly defined share listed in it.

Hope this helps you get going with it.

Hi Adolf, thank you for your reply.
The “share” link was listed under IPFire menu but not active until I rebooted the server.
Thank You

@bonnietwin I am happy to update the SAMBA wiki page for you, however, I am not sure what needs to be removed and what stays. Any assistance would be highly appreciated.

That would be great. Thanks for the offer :+1:

My plan was to basically do a fresh start get screenshots of the various steps you have to do to create/edit users, create/edit shares, starting and stopping the daemons and to show what the status section at the bottom of the screen shows when a share has been created and is linked to from a client.

Maybe some of what is currently there is still valid but it is very likely that even the valid bits no longer look the same.

When you have done some or all of your edits, I can relatively easily have a look at it and see if it makes sense to me when I am looking at my samba WUI page.

Bear in mind, although I have some knowledge about samba and shares, I don’t use it in real use on my IPFire system. I just have it installed on a dev vm system so when a major package update occurs, I can just test out that a new share can be created and existing ones can be connected to. I only use samba on machines that are protected by IPFire.

Give it a go and see how it goes and myself or other forum users can always help you if you run into any problems or have questions.

Ok, thank you, I was basically just going to do a copy and paste of what you posted above as I also do not use SAMBA, however, I will see what is there and then see if I can incorporate your post above with the existing info.
Thank you for the offer of taking a look and comparing with your SAMBA page.
I will start later this evening and advise when I am done.

If there are bits you can’t show as you don’t run Samba, then do what you can and it will help minimise the further work by me or others.

Will do, sir. Will update here once done. Happy to assist.

Hi @bonnietwin I humbly apologise for the delay in getting to the wiki, I am having a few personal issues that need to be resolved first. I will try to get on it over the weekend.
