General question about subnet

Hello everyone,

Pretty simple question here new to networking.
Got IPFire set up on a machine and can access the web using its connection. Is this connection automatically a separate network from my main one. I want to create a subnet of my main network that is not connected to the main network but still has access to the internet. I know there is a VLAN option but most say just to make a firewall rule blocking traffic to the main router. Just want to know the best way of going about this. Thanks to everyone in advance!

Welcome!

Have you read IPF doco?

Each IPF port is configured on a separate subnet - meaning they are different networks from an IP routing perspective.

How many ports does the NIC in your IPF hardware have? What sort of hardware you running IPF on?

I have a bit. I am using a protecli device that has 2 rj45 ports on the back a LAN and WAN. Connection from main router into the WAN port(green connection) and connected my laptop from the lan port( red connection).

Used an IPF Protectli 2x port appliance for several years, I have since switched to one of their 4x port appliances. Great platform for IPF.

I think you need to do some more reading.

WAN is generally on RED and your LAN on GREEN.

I suspect you will need to run IPF setup again to configure correctly.
