it seems there is a DHCP lease problem on RED (WIFI) that cause internet interruption.

It seems that for some reason your IPFire is blocking queries to the dhcp server.

No I haven’t, but I’m working with withelists for both, firewall and client networks. I never thought about opening that DHCP ports for the firewall, while it’s getting an IP address if it connects to the network.

DHCP is also working for the clients, even there is no firewall rule to allow that. I can see all the DHCP requests in the DHCP log file. Actually that is interesting, Why is this working, if the ports are supposed to be closed?

For testing I’ve created a firewall rule for the firewall itself:

When you get an IP address initially, you do a broadcast to 255.255.255.255. You receive a valid reply from a server which contains the IP of the server giving the lease. That is allowed, presumably because you are allowing broadcast traffic out.

When it comes to renew the lease, dhclient directly queries the server which issued you the lease. I’d guess you are blocking that. That means the lease will expire forcing dhcpd to re-broadcast the DHCP request to 255.255.255.255 which again is allowed and you get another lease.

On other distros there can be a file, dhclient.conf, in which you can put something like supersede domain-name-servers 255.255.255.255. This will then override the server queried for a DHCP renewal. I cannot see if this is possible in IPF as the file does not exist.

I’ve tried looking at how dhclient is called and no conf file is specified, so, if you are in luck, dhclient should default to using /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf. Try creating the file and add the supersede line and see if that gets round it.

I don’t think you have a bug.

IPFire doesn’t use dhclient. It is using dhcpcd to get the ip on the red interface.

Do you have the bogon ip blocklists enabled?
If yes then those could be dropping the renew lease requests as your red interfacec is using a private address range and the red interface is normally expected to have public ip’s.

Somewhere in the documentstio or in a blog post i remember it mentioni g to not enable the bogon blocking if you have private ip’s on the red network.

I tried and failed to trace it through and kept mixing dhcpcd and dhclient.

Having said that, my statements about the DHCP renewal mechanism should be correct. Unfortunately I can’t find any equivalent of the supersede domain-name-servers in dhcpcd, so probably the best way around is to allow UDP to destination port 67 in the firewall. (or allow out UDP source port 68).
