Could not read private key username/password/ok/string from management

We have been utilizing OpenVPN for years to connect to our company network.

A colleague installed the latest version of the client, v2.6.1, on a new machine, copied the key file and tried to connect as always. After entering username and password, he gets:
ERROR: could not read Private Key username/password/ok/string from management

After downgrading to 2.5.10, there was no error message and he got connected.

What happened between the versions that causes the error?

Hi,

looking at the release notes of version 2.6.1, no changes in OpenVPN’s client immediately strike me as relevant.

Potentially, this might be related to the transition to OpenSSL 3.x; does recreating and reimporting the OpenVPN certificates change the behavior of your client?

Thanks, and best regards,
Peter Müller
