Can't get RED access (VLAN on RED, how to?)

On a new installation I couldn’t get RED access from a ISP’s router. Fixed IP. No traffic flows. They swear all traffic is untagged (I haven’t checked this however, fishing for ideas here). Stats show traffic sent but 0 bytes received.

A newly installed IPFire didn’t work. Tested with two different Intel NICs plus a USB NIC, no go. I installed old versions to back kernels, back to a one year old version, no go. I also brought a personal IPFire device, also newly installed, tested and working flawlessly at home, it didn’t work either (tested with Realtek, Intel and the aforementioned USB card). Here’s the kicker: when using my Windows computer with the USB card used for testing in the two non-working IPFire machines, the fixed IP immediately worked and traffic was just fine.

I have never seen anything like it. The only thing I can come to think of is that the router is using some sort of VLAN tagging anyway, and the Windows driver for that USB NIC is ignoring it but Linux is respecting it in some way. Ideas about this? And can RED even be wrangled to use VLANs?
