This is probably a BIG security issue more than anything else!
Many of the users don’t have avatars yet!
Instead of the avatars being “boring” grey outlines maybe the default could be a letter-based avatar like this:

I see some letters! These are better than the grey outlines. Are there colorful letters available (like the example above)?

I didn’t work in that yet, because I do not have a nice hash function that generates a usable colour code from a username.
Of course it is easy to come up with something that gives you any colour, but it would need to go with out colour scheme and pastel colours are not really it, right?
