I haven’t looked in the Unbound logs in a long time. The other day, I looked and noticed a bunch of INFO messages similar to:

```auto
22:27:53 unbound: [3869:0] info: validation failure <_dns.resolver.arpa. SVCB IN>: no NSEC3 records from 9.9.9.9 for DS resolver.arpa. while building chain of trust
22:26:19 unbound: [3869:0] info: validation failure <_dns.resolver.arpa. SVCB IN>: key for validation resolver.arpa. is marked as invalid because of a previous
```

Everything appears to be working normally. I’m not seeing any lookup issues. These just appear to be informational logs.

I was curious if this had anything to do with Quad9 because they filter for malware. So I switched to Google DNS and got the same thing:

```auto
07:09:45 unbound: [3871:0] info: validation failure <_dns.resolver.arpa. SVCB IN>: no DNSSEC records from 8.8.4.4 for DS resolver.arpa. while building chain of trust
```

I then disabled DoT, switching back to UDP protocol and that seemed to quiet the logs.

Again, everything is working fine. These just seem like informational logs. But “validation failure” sounds more serious than just informational? Is this a known issue? Do I just ignore?

Thanks!

NSEC3 is also related to DNSSEC so both those messages say that there was a failure in validating the DNSSEC status.

I would interpret this as some connection issue causing the DNSSEC validation to fail.

If you get this continuously, so hundreds or thousands of entries per day for this message then it might be an indicator of some sort of systemic problem, although what I don’t know.

I don’t use either of the DNS Servers you mentioned but I checked through my DNS logs for the whole of December for any NSEC3 or DNSSEC messages. I found only two related to NSEC3 and these were not a DNS Server but related to a website where it looks like it was giving a wrong or no feedback on the NSEC3 communication.

Thank you, Adolf. Are you using DNS over TLS? I only seem to see these messages when I am using DoT.

Yes, I am using DoT.

I am also using the Recursor Mode, so with no DNS servers specified at all.

I have changed my system to using 5 specified DNS Servers and will see how that goes.

When you see those messages, do you see them at least once every day or is it more infrequent. That will give me a view of how long I need to run my system with this modified setup.

Here is the set of DNS servers that I have changed to. These were the set I used to use in the past before changing to Recursor Mode, which I have been using probably for a year or so now.

Again all of these listed servers are running with DoT.

It seems the more the internet is being used, the more log entries appear. I’m seeing anywhere from 5-20 entries per hour. I also just remoted into two other IPFires I manage and am seeing the same logs there. All three IPFires are set up the same way:

 ![dns](https://community.ipfire.org/uploads/default/original/2X/a/a89a3e4d5d684862938ad4a799d9d92c4904a094.png)

In the screenshot, Google DNS is disabled, but I did enable it as a test and I was getting log entries referring to Google’s DNS servers as well.

</div>

I will run my setup then for a couple of hours and see if there is any issues.

With the cloudflare 1.0.0.2 and 1.1.1.2 entries and the quad9 entries, they do filtering and modification of the DNS response and this can show up as DNSSEC failure messages.

As far as I am aware google dns 8.8.8.8 does not do any filtering of the dns response with that server IP, so after a couple of hours I will try that out on my system.

I will feedback what I find.

Yes, that is why I tested Google DNS. I wanted to see if it was related to the filtering. It does not appear to be based on same log entries appearing for Google’s servers.

I got no messages about DNSSEC or NSEC3 with my DNS server set and also not with dns.google. I had both sets running for 2 hours each.

Thank you for trying. Like I said, there is no noticeable problem with DNS and the lines suggest Information logs only, so I guess it’s no big deal?

From midnight to 6am, 54 log entries. So it’s happening even with minimal network activity. It is a curiosity, especially with me seeing it on three different IPFires. I’m curious if anyone else here has these INFO messages in their UNBOUND logs?

I am using TLS.

I asked quad9 about this type of issues in July 2024 and received this response:

See the last paragraph for their solution.
🙃

Since I wanted to used TLS I left it on and ignored their best practices…

Thanks, Jon. That still doesn’t explain why Adolf didn’t get the messages when he tested with Quad9, but your answer is good enough for me. 🙂
