Personal curiosity about Precision Time Protocol (PTP)

Hello everyone,

I have a technical question, and I hope you can clarify it for me.
Are the IPFire development plans, in the medium or long term, planning to introduce the PTP protocol, either to replace or complement the current NTP-based synchronization service?

Thank you.

I’m wondering about the context of this question.

Are you talking about IPFire synchronizing with a PTP source or IPFire as a synchronization source?

As I said, my curiosity is whether the possibility of replacing or complementing the current NTP server service with the new PTP is planned or has been evaluated.

PTP is used for synchronization at the nanosecond level. In my opinion, a dedicated system is required for such purposes. I doubt whether a firewall is a good place to run PTP as a time source.

You should also set up a reliable NTP server for IPFire synchronization. I don’t recommend using pool.ntp.org because there’s a risk of time manipulation. If possible, it’s best to have your own dedicated time server.

It is not in the Roadmap and has not been discussed in the monthly calls or on the development mailing list.

As I heard, an own gps-based timeserver in your local network, which can be used as source in ipfire, should be a very good setup.

Best Regards

Thanks for the replies, as I said it was just my curiosity and I think, but this is just my opinion that the most sensible reason is that a firewall is a suitable environment for using PTP as said by @alexand
