Networking Issues, weird "slowdowns"

Hey there,

This is my first time running ipfire and so far I really like it, except for those weird networking issues.

It seems that the issue is the “first connection” within X minutes.

From the IPfire machine:
[root@ipfire ~]# ping 8.8.8.8
PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=41 ttl=55 time=2027 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=42 ttl=55 time=1013 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=43 ttl=55 time=50.7 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=44 ttl=55 time=47.1 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=45 ttl=55 time=54.7 ms

— 8.8.8.8 ping statistics —
54 packets transmitted, 10 received, 81% packet loss, time 53615ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 18.745/357.332/2027.161/625.330 ms, pipe 3

Doing the same ping a few seconds (sometimes minutes) later then sometimes works as expected, until it gets that heavy initial load time again.

In a browser this is visible by no page actually loading on an initial request, chrome is showing “ERR_CONNECTION_RESET” or “dns_probe_finished_nxdomain” and reloading a few seconds (sometimes nearly minutes) later the site just loads without issue (for a while).

On the Smart TV every change loads forever, but running videos usuallly work like a charm.

I tried different DNS settings, right now i use Pi-Hole with Google and/or overwritten ones on the local machine, completely ignoring the ipfire DNS. Yet i still face these heavy loading time issues. So DNS does not appear to be the actual issue i guess.

Also sometimes, for a few seconds or even minutes it just works.

I am using a Mini-ATX board with a skylake dual core, and 2 buildin network interfaces “Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (2) I219-V (rev 31)” and “Intel Corporation I211 Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03)”. And now also got a “Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection” today (all lspci outputs) in case a slow interface was the fault. But nope, same issue

My Modem is a Huawei b525-232 in bridge mode. When that was still wired to my Wireless Router instead of ipfire i did not have such issues.

I am out of ideas.

What could be the issue for these slowdowns?
