I will try that with the installation on a USB stick.
I would need a medium with the ipfire ISO and a USB stick that I connect to the current router. Then simply install on the connected USB stick and then boot from it.
Is this the right procedure?
Yes. Be careful during the setup procedure to chose the correct destination disk, otherwise you might partition and reformat the internal HD.
