Looking for help, I can’t seem to get IPFire (2.29 core 200) to recognize the Ethernet apapters connected.
I have tried cold and hot booting (Ethernet apapters plugged in prior to booting up) yet IPFire fails to register them connected. Neither makes a difference.
Are the only options to buy additional NiC cards or run IPFire through a VM.
I’ve exhausted all of AI’s suggestions but those. And unable to discover insights from the documentation.
Additionally, my modem and router are one and the same, I attempted to buy another router as the dedicated RED WAN but my University/classmates thought otherwise and the second router is no longer transmitting internet.
I am working in a hostile environment and don’t know what I am doing wrong.
I’m not interested in spending any more money trying to fix the problem, should I switch to another open source firewall that may be more compatible with my hardware limitations.
The community helped me sort out the installation issues. Hopefully they can provide insight on this current predicament.
It has been too long since I have tried the same thing but I seem to remember something with the Intel Mac that causes this issue. I do not believe it is System Integrity Protection (SIP) related but it may be.
I am not able to find my old notes. I ended up repurposing the 2012 Intel Mac mini (with MacOS) and not using it for IPFire. I used an old Intel box for my first IPFire device.
I know this doesn’t help you but I seem to remember the issues I found were more related to the Mac

You may want to try the same. I haven’t used Claude long enough to determine if there are issues with me cutting and pasted the Claude answer. So I’ll leave this up to you.
Claude gave a more thorough response than ChatGPT using the recommended prompt framework and ultimately, I’m going to cut my losses and try my luck with one of the senses. Thanks for all the eyeballs. Believe IPFire is the superior firewall but just ill-suited to my hardware (i.e., it’s not you, it’s me)…
Well if the usb to ethernet adapters work in linux then its either a driver issue or a PRAM conflict which the later can be solved with holding down command+option+p+r and power it on and hold it down until for 30 seconds and release. I’ve only have had a few issues with MAC mini and usb hardware issues, but on a usb drives I had to add intel_iommu=on iommu=pt acpi=off to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub and of course run update-grub so they would be recognized at boot up. But if they are not there after boot it tells me the usb to ethernet adapters are not Linux compatible and some may need a driver installed if it has one available. It sounds like you don’t have compatible ethernet adapters which only 30% of them are not Linux compatible.
Don’t rely on AI they make the worst Linux programmers BTW.
