That is because the arm flash image is configured for serial console by default.
If using HDMI & USB Keyboard: edit the uENV.txt file and change SERIAL-CONSOLE=ON to OFF
This turns serial console off and HDMI on.

haha what are the odds of people having a serial cable laying around versus having a keyboard laying around?
A serial cable ( and a serial USB adapter ) are much easier appliable than a HDMI monitor and a keyboard.
There are quite a lot of arm based systems that have no video output at all, whereas all have a serial console connection.
Hence why it is made serial by default, because that will work with all.
In the wiki on the page covering all the different arm systems it mentions about changing this text file if you want to run with hdmi.
There isn’t a link for the Orange Pi 5 as no one has installed on that in the past, or if they have they have not updated the arm hardware wiki page.
My production IPFire system, which is x86 based, has no video output and when doing re-installs on it I use the serial console. When I bought it, it came with a serial cable connector.
And where is this file located?
I don’t find it when i search for uENV.txt
Mount the flashed sd card and there will be two partitions with filesystems that get mounted.
One will be ~2G large and this is the main installation files.
The other will be around 520MB and this is the boot partition.
uEnv.txt is in there - you can see it in this screenshot that I took, third from the bottom.
Then open it with a text editor and you will see the following:-
Change the last line to read SERIAL-CONSOLE=OFF
, save it and then insert the sd card into your pi and boot it.
Haha, GODDAYUM i only noticed one partition…
I’m sorry for wasting your time.
But thanks!
This didnt work. The set ip address was not seen in the network
No Hdmi output…
Sorry guys, i’m switching hardware for pfsense now
